September 2008: Visited with Nancy Hood, the lookout, who is celebrating her 50th season as a fire lookout. The lookout building underwent some major repairs this season that included new stairs, window shutters and a modern outdoor toilet.

July 2008: On July 12th a group of 500 Boy Scouts from the Order of the Arrow began a five day service project on the Shasta-Trinity National Forest. Included in this project was the refurbishing of the lookout on Little Mount Hoffman.

1934: The following are recommendations from "A Report on the Lava Beds National Monument" by Ranger Don Fisher, 1934:
....."1. Steps to be built to the top of Schonchin Butte.
.. ...2. Lookout to be erected on Hippo Butte for use after electric storms or other times of high fire hazard. There is about 1/4 of the monument area that is not within the view of any of the present lookouts and in addition quite a portion of the Shasta National Forest, north of Medicine Lake is in a blind area."

February 21, 1939: The following is a memorandum from J. Volney Lewis, Regional Geologist for the Regional Director:
....."I have read the memorandum of Superintentendent Leavitt, dated February 10, 1939, and accompanying Report on Forest Protection Requirements, Lava Beds National Monument, 1939, by Chief Ranger Crouch.
.....Practically every detail of the proposed construction program vitally affects the geological features of the monument, and I concur fully in the comments, dated February 18, 1939, by Regional Landscape Architect Davidson.
.....The lookout station certainly should be constructed of the local stone and according to a design that will blend as fully as possible with the summit features of Schonchin Butte, which is the oustanding, centrally situated cinder cone of the area. For the same reason, the trail and the telephone line should be made as nearly as invisible as possible; and additional roads into unbroken wild areas should not be constructed unless they are urgently needed.
.....In order that the necessary construction may be done with the least possible injury, I recommend that the program be given careful review on the ground, by the Landscape Architect, the Geologist, and the Engineer, preferably together, before any plans are approved for construction." (signed)
